All you need to know about Terrazzo Flooring

Writer: Savneet KaurSavneet Kaur

Terrazzo flooring is a popular type of flooring that is known for its durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. It is made by embedding small chips of various materials, such as marble, quartz, glass, or other aggregates, into a cement or epoxy matrix. The surface is then polished to create a smooth and glossy finish. There are several types of terrazzo flooring based on the materials used and the installation method. Here are some common types:

Traditional Terrazzo: This type of terrazzo flooring uses a cementitious binder, typically made of Portland cement, mixed with aggregates like marble or granite chips. It is poured in place and then ground and polished to achieve the desired finish.

Epoxy Terrazzo: Epoxy terrazzo is created by mixing epoxy resin with aggregates. It offers greater design flexibility as epoxy can be tinted to achieve a wide range of colors. Epoxy terrazzo is often used in areas that require high chemical resistance, such as laboratories or hospitals.

Rustic Terrazzo: Rustic terrazzo combines larger aggregates with a cement or epoxy binder to create a textured, more rustic appearance. The larger aggregates can include materials like river rocks, seashells, or even recycled materials.

Palladiana Terrazzo: Palladiana terrazzo is a type of terrazzo that features irregularly shaped stone pieces. It originated in Italy and is known for its unique and artistic appearance. The irregular stone pieces are set in a cement or resin binder and can be arranged in intricate patterns.

Venetian Terrazzo: Venetian terrazzo is similar to traditional terrazzo but is often made with finer aggregates, such as marble dust or smaller marble chips. It is known for its smooth finish and can be polished to a high shine.

Mosaic Terrazzo: Mosaic terrazzo combines small, colorful chips of materials, such as glass, ceramic, or marble, to create intricate patterns and designs. It allows for a high level of customization and is often used to create decorative accents or artistic features.

These are just a few examples of the different types of terrazzo flooring available. The choice of terrazzo flooring type depends on factors such as the desired aesthetics, the environment it will be installed in, and the specific requirements of the project.
