Let your home breathe

Writer: Savneet KaurSavneet Kaur

To make your home breathable and improve indoor air quality, consider implementing the following steps:

Increase Natural Ventilation: Open windows and doors whenever possible to allow fresh air to circulate. This helps remove stagnant air and pollutants. Create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of a room to encourage airflow.

Use Air Purifying Plants: Incorporate indoor plants known for their air-purifying properties, such as snake plants, spider plants, peace lilies, or aloe vera. These plants can help filter out toxins and improve air quality.

Keep a Clean Environment: Regularly clean your home to minimize dust, pet dander, and other allergens. Dust surfaces, vacuum carpets and upholstery, and mop hard floors to reduce the accumulation of particles in the air.

Use Natural Cleaning Products: Choose natural cleaning products or make your own using non-toxic ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Avoid harsh chemicals that can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.

Avoid Synthetic Fragrances: Synthetic fragrances found in air fresheners, scented candles, and cleaning products can contribute to poor indoor air quality. Opt for natural alternatives or use essential oils for a pleasant aroma.

Control Humidity: Maintain appropriate humidity levels in your home to prevent excessive moisture or dryness. Use dehumidifiers in damp areas and humidifiers in dry climates to achieve optimal humidity levels (around 30-50%).

Install Exhaust Fans: Properly ventilate areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Install exhaust fans to remove excess humidity, odors, and pollutants generated from cooking, bathing, or doing laundry.

Choose Natural Materials: Opt for furniture, flooring, and other home materials made from natural, low-emission sources. Avoid synthetic materials that can release harmful chemicals into the air. Look for products labeled as low-VOC or eco-friendly.

Maintain HVAC Systems: Regularly service and clean your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Change air filters as recommended by the manufacturer to ensure proper airflow and reduce the circulation of dust and allergens.

Keep a Smoke-Free Environment: Avoid smoking indoors, as it releases harmful pollutants into the air. If you have a fireplace, ensure proper ventilation and have it regularly inspected and cleaned to minimize the release of smoke and particles.

By following these steps, you can create a more breathable and healthy indoor environment for you and your family. Regular maintenance, proper ventilation, and the use of natural and low-toxicity materials will contribute to better indoor air quality and overall well-being.
